Who we are.
Founded in San Francisco's historic Chinatown in 1997, Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Institute is a cultural education institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Cantonese opera.
Our founder and owner Xiu Ben Chen is an extraordinary Erhu concertmaster with over 50 years of experience, who has performed worldwide and now leads our ensemble while teaching the next generation.
Through our performances and educational initiatives, we have spent decades enriching our diverse community with the beauty and tradition of Cantonese opera.
What is Cantonese Opera?
Cantonese opera, a rich tradition within Chinese opera, is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Originating from southern China's Guangdong province, it is a captivating art form that seamlessly blends music, singing, acting, and acrobatics.
Through elaborate costumes, intricate movements, and compelling storytelling, performers bring to life timeless tales of romance, heroism, and moral virtue that have enchanted audiences for generations.
